Mr. Happy, Henry and I had a great Canada Day. After a relaxing morning at home, we headed over to Fort Needham for a concert. It was the anti-Nickle-hack event with lots of space, families, picnics and dogs, and nary a port-a-potty nor beer tent in sight.
We went specifically because Brent Randall and his Pinecones were playing some songs they wrote for Mr. Happy's TV show concept, Chubby Big Buddy.
Background: Mr. Happy has had an idea for children's tv show buzzing about in his head for many years. The main character is "Chubby Big Buddy" who is based on a friend's cat of the same name. Mr. Happy is always sketching and I'm forever finding scraps of paper with cartoon cats on them. Last fall, Mr. Happy asked Brent Randall to write a few songs for the show and if you are lucky enough to be under the age of 15 and related to us, you may have a cd with some of those songs on them.
The songs were performed for the first time in front of a real live audience on Sunday. Mr. Happy and I made shirts especially for the day. I wore a Chubby Big Buddy shirt and he wore his "Al Paka and the Aliens" shirt - Al Paka is the lead singer of the Aliens band... erm... just trust me on this, ok?

"Save Your Sweets for Treats"
"Chubby's Theme"
"Fruit Castle"
During "We're Your Friends", people were singing along and waving their hands in the air. It was better than Woodstock.

I thought Mr. Happy was going to burst with pride when some guy walked past us and said to his friend, "Man, those songs are stuck in my head now. That was awesome!"
We also got to see Dusty Keeler (who sang "Drunk on the Internet" and had me doubled over laughing), Matt Reid (who I would like to put in my pocket - red shirt, skinny black tie and all) and Old Man Luedecke (pictured here):
After the concert we went to a friend's place for a lobster boil. I told everyone that the rhubarb was stolen and they all agreed that contraband rhubarb tastes better.

Oh my god, that sounds like so much freaking fun. I WISH we'd had been in Halifax this weekend (you know, living within spitting distance of Fort Needham and all). Nope, we had our tub refinished and vamoosed to Truro for the Canada Day weekend in order to take showers.

ReplyDeleteI totally wanted to go to this but alas, I was scrambling all over the neighbourhood trying to borrow a good scanner because mine burnt out!! I went to get a new one yesterday and found out that staples WAS OPEN on Sunday!!! Can you believe that!?!?! I could have gone and bought one on sunday, finished my illustration and gone to the concert!! sigh...
