Sunblock, Mosquitos, and Sunsets

Since Mr. Happy has the camera cord at the studio I am unable to show you my current mess of WIPs. Which are numerous. Again. Why, why, why do I get myself into these situations? You know, the situation where my WIPs are about the same number the sandwiches I am short of a picnic, if you know what I'm saying?

*pounds head on piano keys and loudly expresses angst* (quick - what SS character was that? No, seriously. I don't remember his name. Do you?)

My MIL, my SIL, her three kids and I spent a week at the family cottage on Grand Lake in New Brunswick. My FIL has been spending his summers at this cottage for over 60 years. It's a magical place. They have to drag me away, kicking and screaming, at the end of every vacation.

The Champion Rock Skipper

This is my nephew, whose nickname has evolved to the point where I call him "Irving Marie" and he responds. He is, without a doubt, the finest rock skipper in the family. While this is a pretty great photo, it does not demonstrate his "mad skillz". He has been known to skip a rock about 15 times. Can you see the rock in the air? Great photography, eh? I'm prepping my porfolio for National Geographic at this very moment.

Flowers on the beach

This photo is meant to distract you from the carnage in the next two photos. Vegans and those opposed to the senseless "braining" of God's creatures, please, avert your eyes.

*Back story: Mr. Happy called me on my cell phone late one evening while I was getting ready for bed at the cottage. The reception was horrid inside so I ventured outside to clear up the static. What was I thinking? The mosquitos were EVERYWHERE. Seriously everywhere. I sustained about 5 bites in the first second. It was hard for Mr. Happy to hear me over the constant slapping. We said goodnight, I snapped my phone shut and headed inside. A little while later, I flipped open my phone and discovered this *this is where the faint of heart should scroll quickly down the page*:

You know you're in the woods when...

Can you see it? No? Here's a closer look.

Closeup of the victim

That's the power of wireless communication, people. Heh heh.

Ok, vegan people, you can look now. I have something to show you:

Hummingbird

She was less than 4 feet from me when I snapped this photo. I think it's a she. There were several humming birds coming to our feeder. At one point, I thought I was going to be caught in the middle of a hummingbird turf war: One bird was at the feeder and two others were hovering around, looking like they were full of Piss and Vinegar instead of 4 parts water, 1 part sugar. They chirped something at each other (it sounded like, "Your momma wears Crocs") and flew off.

I managed to get some pretty good video footage of one of the birds as well. I'll see what I can do about uploading it for those of you who are as dorky as me when it comes to hummingbirds. I just wish I had been able to get a photo of them when they were "resting". They would fly off and sit on a branch in the tree where you could see them almost panting.

We spent a lot of time swimming. You all remember Pippin? My four-legged nephe? Pippin LOVES to swim. We would swim out to the float and Pippin would come with us and spend the majority of the time swimming around, chomping at the water. Only occasionally would he come over to be pulled up on the float for a rest. He wouldn't stay on the float for long before he'd jump back in. He slept like a log every night. And he's built like a brick poophouse.

Here he is, jumping in after a walk around the neighbouring point:

Pippin, jumping in

And here he is, at the end of the day, deciding whether or not he should swim out to greet the kids as they come back to shore:

Guys? Guys?

Doesn't he look like he's saying, "Guys? Guys? Are you having fun without me?"

This is one of my favourite photos from the week:

The kids diving off the float

That's my youngest nephew, diving. He learned to dive this year. And he's not bad at all, especially for a 7 year old.

Here's another favourite photo. The sunset over Grand Lake.

Sunsest at Grand lake

This one is for Sandy

Say it with me, "Ooooooh. Ahhhhhh..."

Ok, I have more to post, but I don't want to overwhelm you. Until tomorrow, ok?

A big thanks to all my KOL knit buds for swinging by the store today to say hi, to buy yarn, and to make my day fly by! You guys are the best! And to the non-KOLers who were in the shop today - it was so great to see all of you too!

And, if you don't already know, today is Moe's 31st birthday!!!!!! If you know and love Moe as much as we all do, please go wish her a happy birthday!!!!

And Monday is The Ninja's Birthday. She'll be 31 too. We love the Ninja! Happy Birthday, Ninja!

  1. I have a place like that, and we never get there enough. Unfortunatly, the mosquitoes are that bad at my house, not just at the camp.

  3. Oh, and I want to spend a week at that place. It looks so lovely and relaxing. We have a hummingbird feeder in our backyard and often they will feed and then rest on our clothesline. So cute.

Thanks for the b-day wishes - I had the best day ever (breakfast at Ardmore, afternoon at Tangled Skeins, lobster at home for supper).

FANTASTIC photos! Wow. Mr Moe and I NEED a cottage.

When you mentioned the piano, the other character I thought of was Schroeder from Peanuts.

Oh, and sorry for bagging Marden's. I was just... surprised.
